About Michael Farrell

Michael Farrell began making photographs and assembled objects in the late 1960s during his college years in the Fine Arts Department at Indiana University where he majored in Graphic Design and Photography. After earning a Master’s degree in Visual Communications from the Institute of Design in Chicago he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1972 to work at the Nebraska ETV Network (now Nebraska Public Media).

He has had a half-century professional career starting as a Cinematographer/Film Editor then later as a Producer, Director and Writer in documentary film and television production with many award winning nationally and internationally distributed programs during his five decades in public broadcasting. He has taught film-making, photography and story-telling at the college level for much of his professional life.

Beginning in the late Sixties and into the Seventies and Eighties (and continuing to today) Michael created a large body of very personal work in photography, drawing, collage and assembled objects. His photographic work spans the genres of Still Life, Landscape and the Nude.

His work has been seen in exhibitions and gallery shows locally and regionally. Major works are included in the exhibitions and collections of the Sheldon Art Museum, the Museum of Nebraska Art, the Joslyn Art Museum and the Great Plains Art Museum.  The work has been shown in several regional venues in neighboring states and is included in a large number of private collections locally as well as in Omaha, New York, San Francisco, Oakland, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Cheyenne, Frankfort, MI and Ottawa and Mexico City.

He is a recipient of the Nebraska Arts Council’s Individual Artist Fellowship in Visual Arts for his assembled objects. His various one-person exhibitions have been included consistently in the top ten art events of the year by the Lincoln Journal-Star.

Michael Farrell is co-founder with Michael Forsberg of the Platte Basin Timelapse project which seeks to answer the question “Where does your water come from?” using remote digital camera systems to create timelapse imagery and stories while providing educational and place based experiences for undergraduate and graduate student associates.
